The truth about Vitamin C

A very interesting article.

Something that will change our perception of Vitamin C that has been around for decades.

Can Vitamin C Cure Colds?

To cut the story short. Here it is :

The research found that vitamin C did little to reduce either the length or severity of colds among the general population. However, studies have found that it may lower the risk of catching a cold among people whose bodies are under high physical stress—think marathon runners or soldiers on subarctic exercises. They were 50 percent less likely to catch a cold if they took a daily dose of vitamin C.

For the rest of us, however, that extra glass of orange juice is not going to do much. "The presumption of the millions of people who are taking vast amounts of vitamin C that they're preventing a cold has no foundation," says Robert Douglas, lead author of the study and former president of the Public Health Association of Australia.

So Where does this assumption comes from ??

It all stems from Linus Pauling, a Nobel Prize-winning chemist who lived from 1901 to 1994. In 1970 he wrote the book "Vitamin C and the Common Cold," which popularized the notion that this particular vitamin could prevent one of the most common ailments on earth.

But the book came with little scientific backing and was largely devoid of evidence, says Pauling biographer Thomas Hager. "He published this very influential health book without writing a single scientific paper on the subject," he says.

With that, it means he had not done any research before he publicised that idea to the world.

It's forgivable. Afterall, it was published in the 70's and no one questioned the realiability of this information. It hasn't done us any harm.

Peace.

Lefties

People who knows me well, will know that i'm left-handed.

Today, i came across one article about lefthandedness : The mysteries of lefthandedness

I thought it might be something interesting. Indeed, it was, but research is still ongoing so it'll take, perhaps, a decade or more for them to find something that is really significant about how different does a brain of a left-handed person works from a right-handed?

I qoute from the article :

Why are only 10 percent of us lefthanded, and why did the ratio seem to change over the last century? Are lefties somehow different - less healthy, more creative?

This indicates there are lesser left-handed people around as time goes on, and also, more left-handed people are unhealthy and so they die early???

So i'm gonna die early??

Then, the most interesting point come into light

Lefthanders really are special, and the ways they differ are yielding insight into human diversity - especially how one person's brain differs from another's.

Every human being is unique but being a lefthanded person, each lefty is more unique in a way his/her brain works differently from other lefties?

"Lefthandedness is connected to a lot of neurodevelopmental disorders," says Daniel Geschwind, a UCLA expert in what is known as neurobehavioral genetics. People with autism and schizophrenia are more likely to be lefthanded, he says. "But with that risk, there is also gain."

NEURODEVELOPMENTAL DISORDERS. AUTISM. SCHIZOPHRENIA~!!!

My God....

I'm gonna turn crazy someday.

Various studies have found weak but statistically significant associations between lefthandedness and schizophrenia, autism and even homosexuality.

Psychologist Ronald Yeo of the University of New Mexico thinks the common link is a kind of flexibility known as developmental instability. Roughly, this describes the tendency to get off track during development, he says, freeing some brains to vary from the majority design, with each component in its place.

That may allow for novel ways of arranging the brain. Perhaps only an unusual configuration can produce an artistic and scientific genius like Leonardo da Vinci, who was reportedly both lefthanded and gay.

hmm....so i could be a homo in future.. Who knows, rite?

GOOD.

By the end of the day, i still don't find anything special about myself rather than: i might be dying earlier than right-handed people, i might turn into a nut someday and i have chances of getting a female life partner.

Great.

I'm not so special after all. That's just the way the scientists put it so they won't scare off parents, and so parent won't train their kids to use right hand in the early days of their lives to be a right-handed person. That way, they can continue to do researches. Isn't that brilliant? [okay, that's just one sarcastic comment i made for fun]

I'm just disappointed that they didn't mention LEFTIES ARE SMARTER THAN RIGHTHANDER. haha.... No puns intented.

Good Old Friend

Yesterday night, i was alone at home and i thought about the people i could call or sms since i was quite bored.

Then, one of my good old friend popped into my head. Actually, he's my closest friend from college. Alvin.

I send him a message as we haven't been talking for a few months liaw. Half year perhaps??

Her Majesty :Hey, u know wat! Suddenly, i feel like i miss you. Miss our friendship. Miss the time we chat and get-together, so send you message. Keep in touch, k? Cheers!

Alvin : What makes you suddenly become so sensible? I miss our college life too. I still remember my first impression on you. You remember what you did to me? haha.

Her Majesty : I'm thinking about my relationship, then i thought about you lo. I dun remember oh. What did i do ?

Alvin : You scold me bad words on the 1st meet. That's why i always remember you. haha..

Her Majesty : HAHA...DID I DO THAT?!? My god! I'm so bad. Why did i scold you?

Alvin : Coz i keep reminding you to copy the notes, but you are busy chatting with Fei Fei. After that, maybe you felt that i'm too annoying, then you turn to me and said : Fuck. It's none of your business whether i want to copy or not. Then, i was speechless. Can imagine my situation?

Her Majesty : YAMEH? I'm so rude ah. Sorry ah. ahhaha...

Alvin : 7 years after that you want me to accept your apologies? Forget about it. I shall remember you till i die. haha...

LOL..

That's one of the best thing in good friends.

One can do something as bitchy as i did and the other will remember it. Years later, it'll be a joke that both enjoy talking about. haha...

My god, i totally have no idea i did that. I swear.

I can really imagine the situation. Everyone around us would jaw-drop instantly and become speechless . The section of that lecture hall would suddenly turn quiet and everyone would be looking back and forth between my face and his face. [ i understand myself enough to know that i don't scold people softly, it would definitely be loud. ] He would look like a total idiot being scolded by me in that manner. Poor Alvin.

I didn't realise i was really being SO RUDE. He's such a good-hearted person because he ignored the embarassement i caused him and still accept my crappy attitude. lol..

I guess that's why we become so close. I really miss him. Although i don't really get along with his girlfriend aka future wife (perhaps next year), we are still very close. No, I didn't offend her. In fact, i haven't really spoken to her yet. He's the one who told her all about me, when they were still friends. Somehow, jealousy caused him a lot of trouble after that. Poor Alvin. haha...

I hope for the day when me, him and both of our partners can sit together at the same table and chat like old friends. He's one of the friends i cherish most, although i'm such a jerk at times. haha...

I miss you.
